Laura Zillen: Registered Dietitian by trade and practitioner of Motivational Interviewing (MI) by passion.
When a BA in Sociology and Psychology didn’t call me into traditional counseling, I pivoted to nutrition. Whether modifying diet for health or personal goals, behavior change is the foundation of any lasting intervention. I knew my clinical education needed a practical component. Therefore, I studied health coaching and Motivational Interviewing while earning my MS in Nutrition.
Over the last four years, I put my studies to good use in the dialysis and inpatient hospital settings. I work with patients to achieve goals related to diet and food-related medication management (e.g. consistently taking phosphate binders with meals). In addition to patient care, I train other health practitioners in Motivational Interviewing. With my studies and several years of training, I earned my MINT Membership in 2021. Now, I’m on a mission to train the healthcare world in Motivational Interviewing.
Whether you’re a nurse, social worker, or dietitian like me, you have no time to waste. MI-consistent visits with patients increase their likelihood of implementing health-positive changes.
